In all seriousness, what a start to the year. Nobody saw this coming, least of all that uneducated, substance-abusing fuckhead Paul Merson. But enough about bitter Gooners. We need to talk about Harry.
There's a reason Spurs fans idolise Harry Kane at the moment. He epitomises everything great about this club. Who'd have thought, even a year ago that he would be scoring twice against Mourinho's Chelsea and winning Man of the Match. You just couldn't make it up. Although I presume the so-called bright sparks on Match of the Day will pick up on it tonight, I'll explain just what makes this boy so special.
Kane and able. |
Quite simply, he has everything you need as a modern day centre forward. His work rate is second to none. He'd run himself into the ground for this club. By both closing down and working back he adds a whole new dynamic to the side we've been sorely lacking with strikers in the past few years. As well as all of his off the ball endeavours, Harry possesses excellent tight control, a powerful long range shot and remarkable presence for someone so young. But the best part? He doesn't respect anyone. Cahill? Ivanovic? The dirty, racist excuse for a man that is John Terry? He just doesn't care. He bullied them today. Supposedly the best defence in the league couldn't handle him. They just had no answer. His second was as good a piece of technique I've seen from a Spurs centre forward since Berbatov. It really was sensational and he deserves every bit of praise he gets.
Nacer Chadli was also superb today, arguably putting in his best ever performance in a Spurs shirt. He used his strength to great effect and always found space off the ball. What made a massive difference today was his use of possession. He virtually always found his man after beating several defenders and always looked composed near goal. His finish for our fifth (yes, fifth goal if you've been living on Mars this year) summed up his performance.
We were excellent all over the park to be honest. Lloris was his usual outstanding self in goal, making a crucial save from Azpilicueta in the second half. The back four defended well all game asides from Rose appealing for a throw on the way to their first and Fazio mistaking himself for Ronaldinho for their second. To be fair to them both though they were part of a generally solid-looking back line. Years of supporting Tottenham had me worried for the whole match but a neutral would tell you we deserved to win the game today.
Dembele replaced the injured Mason early on and did himself no harm in terms of securing a first team place again. Bentaleb covered every inch of grass in front of the back four. Eriksen found space and always looked like creating something and even Townsend, the Marmite of our midfield put in a good shift. It is worth noting he took his penalty exceptionally well. The late incoming Paulinho also put in a good shift and linked up very well with Chadli and Kane. I wouldn't write off the Brazilian too soon, I would argue he still has something to offer.
2015 could be the start of something brilliant for Tottenham. Still in all cup competitions and going strong in the league, Pochettino's side are finally beginning to click. Today was our best performance of the season and everyone could finally see the Argentine's tactics working to the height of their power. Let him get a few more players in and perfect his starting line up and we can see how far he can take us. So far, so good I'd say. It's also worth mentioning that this is only the second time a side has put five goals past a Mourinho side. The first? Pep Guardiola's Barcelona. Let the facts speak for themselves. We might not have the calibre of players we had under Redknapp but believe me, that's as good as we've played in decades. The team ethic today was something else.
Things couldn't really have gone any better today, could they?. We proved everyone wrong and hopefully this is the start of a successful 2015. Happy New Year, yids and yidettes!
