This topic has been almost done to death. Alas, I haven't had my say yet. So I'm going to put one final dagger in the subject. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride of pros, cons, and... well, that's about it. Enjoy.
The Pros
Wait a minute, there are pros to selling our star player!? That can't be right!
Think again. We're talking £80-100million. Treble our previous highest received transfer fee. That's a lot of cash. Like, a LOT. The biggest transfer the world has ever seen. This mind-boggling fee would almost single-handedly fund our new stadium, take our net spend down into the minus numbers or be used to buy any wonder of new personnel. So on the face of it, you're thinking; "Yeah, let him go! No player is worth that amount of money!". Wrong. Value is all relative. Is Gareth Bale worth £80-100mil? No, probably not. But to Tottenham? He's priceless.
Sure, we could take the money, but what if this happens? Then what!? |
The Cons
Ah, the meat of the article. Good old cons. Everything in life has cons. Want a sandwich? You're gonna get fat. Don't eat it? You die. Life sucks.

Do you really want to see someone else wear this number? Asides from blokes in the Brickies, of course. |
There are certainly a lot of cons to selling your star player. Let's start with the most obvious; you've sold your star player. No more Bale from 40 yards, no more ferocious free-kicks, no more Bale digging us out when we need him the most. All gone. We've added Soldado which, in theory, should compensate for the loss of goals to the side. But Bale's goals came from nothing. He was essentially able to pull a victory out of his arse. Soldado, from what I have seen of the guy, is more of a penalty-box poacher. The Spanish Francis Jeffers (add some ability to that comparison). I just don't see us winning as many tight matches without our biggest match-winner.

THINK OF THE TECHNIQUE!!! |
Another reason Bale should not be sold is this; how do you replace him? Perhaps you take Di Maria as part of the deal but even in this fantasy, how do you convince a player who is conceivably in Ancelotti's plans to drop everything and join a side in the Europa League? It's a very difficult situation. Of course we've signed Chadli, but even in our wildest dreams we wouldn't think he'd be as good as Bale. The simple answer is this; Bale is irreplaceable.

Same celebration, same ears, worse technique. Pass. |
A further con (they just keep coming, don't they?) is the message it sends out to other players. "Hey Lloris, Vertonghen, you guys listen up! We sell our best players!" Now, if I was one of our top earners and I saw Gareth 'jump ship' so to speak, I would personally feel less committed knowing I could walk away the second the going got tough.
Finally, where exactly would selling Bale leave us? Perhaps not square one, but certainly several shapes backwards. As previously stated by myself and virtually every other Spurs fan out there, Bale is essentially indispensable to our club. Selling him would leave our team considerably weaker, especially on paper. And, perhaps most importantly, could you imagine our rating on FIFA 14? WE MIGHT EVEN BE 4 STARS!!!

I didn't live to see motion-capture in FIFA to see him play for fucking Madrid. |
The Verdict
Don't sell Bale. That's it, really. Keep him. Get at least one more season out of him. Hell, who knows... a Premier League winners medal might even convince him to stay for longer.
