Bale shapes up to hit another free-kick. |
At the moment, Gareth Bale defies description. Any amount of hyperbole would do the lad a disservice. I've spent 20 minutes flipping through a thesaurus looking for "amazeballs" synonyms and still there's nothing that quite sums up this boy's talent. Granted, he wasn't at his best today. But two sublime efforts have given us a lead to take to France and something to fight for. Forget CR7, tonight it's all about GB11.
Onto the actual match, and the game itself was a lot like a first date. The two tentatively sized one another up as proceedings began, with Tottenham making the more menacing strides. Bale could have easily made it 1-0 if it wasn't for a rare miss. But eventually Tottenham made the first move on the shy Lyon; that man Gareth Bale drove a 35 yard free-kick into the corner of the goal to break the deadlock. I suppose that was a bit like the boy chancing his arm with a boob-grab. Needless to say, it paid off.
Now to make my move... |
The second half, however, Lyon decided to return the favour. When Gallas headed away a cross, we thought the danger had passed. Wrong. Umtiti (great name) decided to what can only be described as 'release the kraken' and score an absolute blockbuster. But hey, whatever, Hugo Lloris would have saved that. Lol. Lyon hitting back was the girl's way of telling the guy she's interested. These Valentines Day jokes doing anything for you? No? On with the rest of the game, then.
Happy Valentines Day anyway! |
For much of the second half we struggled to break Lyon down or create any clear-cut chances. I really thought we'd have to take a poor 1-1 into the second leg, a result which definitely would have favoured Lyon. However, Garethinho had other ideas. We won another free-kick, this time a bit closer to goal. Of course, there was only one man for the job. Bale fired yet another brilliant effort past the keeper, his 3rd set-piece scored in under a week. I seriously think we'll do well to keep him beyond the summer.
On a side note, I was particularly impressed with Lyon's Gomis. Having been previously linked with the striker last month, I was interested to see how he would perform. He essentially did the job I wish Adebayor could do better; he made his presence known to our defenders, he held the ball up extremely well and looked like he also had an eye for goal. His contract runs out this summer and there is no doubt we will be among a host of clubs looking for his signature.
Gomis' 'Salut' |
In 7 days time these two teams take to the pitch again in a game which will decide the quarter-finalists of the Europa League, a game I feel is one of the biggest of our season. It is clear from his team selection that Villas-Boas is treating this competition with the respect that it deserves, and I really hope we can get a result in France that will put us in with a shot of winning the competition.
After their 2-0 win tonight against Cluj, Inter Milan look likely to be our opponents should we progress in a week's time. No doubt Gareth Bale will be relishing the opportunity to go back to the San Siro and repeat the performance that told the world there was a new footballing hero.
I bet Maicon is glad he jumped ship. by Aaron Elliott, voice of @OneHotspurWay |
