5 Reasons #1

Thought I'd make "5 reasons" a regular feature for this blog. Here's the first:

5 Reason's why we should be glad we've got Holtby in January

Lewis Holtby, (right) greeted by Nivea for men's new model
As you've probably heard (unless you've been living under a rock), we've recently confirmed that young playmaker Lewis Holtby will be joining in January as opposed to the original deal that saw him joining in the summer for free. The catch? Levy had to part way with an alleged £1.5mil. "It's only money", fans cry. But in this case they might be right. Here's 5 reasons we should be glad we've secured Holtby in January.

1) He's what we've been missing.

It's no secret that since the departure of Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart we've desperately missed a playmaker. I know we've got Dembele, but I see him more as a box-to-box midfielder as he's not really renowned for his passing ability. At times this season (and countless others for that matter) we've lacked someone to unlock defences. Even Modric and Rafa suffered from it from time to time. I'm hoping Holtby can finally be the key to turning a 0-0 with Stoke into a comfortable victory. Furthermore, he's only 22. Twenty-two! At this ripe young age, he more than likely has another 5 years before he reaches his peak. What's German for 'fuck yeah'?

2) He's raring to go.

Release the kraken!
Did you see today's training photos? Fear not, reader, for I've included a snapshot of Holtby unleashing an absolute rocket with his left foot. From those pictures and his interview, you can immediately see he's being integrated into proceedings and AVB has even said he's in the squad for the Norwich game. However, from previous signings (Lloris, Vertonghen, Dembele) we can expect Holtby to start on the bench. 89th minute winner anyone? Also, while his initial arrival will no doubt freshen up the side, we can presume that the added 6 months of Premier League experience will help him to settle in for the new season. This could prove very significant in the long run; once he learns precisely what AVB expects from him and the way the team plays, he'll no doubt be able to produce his best form from fixture one of the 2013/14 season.

3) Dempsey is not a number 10.

I know what you're thinking. "Oh look, he's having a dig at Dempsey because he doesn't rate him". Quite the opposite. Dempsey is generally accepted to be a stop-gap signing, a good player for a decent price that will score goals. A good squad player. But a replacement for the dynamism of Van der Vaart? No chance. He's just not got enough creativity on the ball. Holtby looks to fit the bill though. From what I've seen of the kid, he looks to combine Rafa's 'buzzing about the place' style with Modric's ability to provide that killer ball. Dempsey doesn't look too happy though.

4) 1.5mil spent, more saved.
Let me paint you a picture. It's 0-0 against X United. They've defended well all game, and we're just lacking that bit of genius around the box. Step up Herr Holtby, creator of chances! His role as the advanced playmaker would help to turn a draw against X United into a win, and eventually help to secure Champions League football. 1.5mil spent, a lot more saved. With the arrival of Champions League football at the Lane again (long overdue I'd say) we can really push on and secure more top-drawer players. Besides, 1.5mil for a player of Holtby's quality and potential? An absolute steal.

5) With Sandro injured and Huddlestone possibly on the way, we need cover!
In a recent interview regarding Holtby, AVB suggested that Holtby was able to play in a variety of positions in the midfield. And if Parker were to get injured, who would we start, Livermore? I'm sorry but whatever you make of the lad he's not good enough to start for us. Holtby, on the other hand, has played central midfield for Schalke already this season and would be capable of playing deep alongside Dembele should he be required to. I think this would prove to be a shrewd bit of business, especially if we were to suffer any more injuries (God forbid).

Well, there you have it, folks. 5 reasons (I'm sure there's more) why signing Holtby in January is important. Thanks for reading.
