Ben Davies
Now, Danny Rose started this season fairly well. He didn't appear to be making the kinds of errors that were prevalent in his game last season. But the closer you looked the more the cracks appeared as his concentration let him down. Enter Ben Davies. He's simply a smarter, more well adapted footballer. He's dogged and determined in both defence and attack but he's also creative. He would definitely be my choice for the left back spot from here on in.
Fazio
A couple of weeks ago Fazio had a very poor game against a resurgent Newcastle side. That I cannot defend. But our fan's reactions to this display were absolutely disgusting. He was slated no end, people were saying he was one of our worst signings ever and he didn't deserve to wear our shirt. I bet they're feeling clever today. Lukaku was in this man's pocket virtually all game. Fazio organised the defence vocally and demonstrated the type of leadership that helped win his former side a European trophy. I'm quite embarrassed that some our fans wrote him off already. He's not the finished article. He's not fast. But he's a good player. Get behind him.
Patience with this lad. |
Nabil Bentaleb
People are going to start thinking I fancy this lad but I seriously cannot rate him highly enough. Today we played our best football in months and I think it was largely due to the return of Bentaleb. He sets the tempo for our passing with quick, incisive touches out wide that make the cumbersome Capoue and dilly-dallying Dembele look like amateurs. It's not just on the ball with Bentaleb though, it's his work rate out of possession. He covers absolutely every blade of grass. Today was his first 90 minutes in months and he looked like he'd been playing week in week out all season. Alongside the unearthed gem that is Ryan Mason we seem to have a nice partnership going on. We covered the most ground we've covered all season today. I don't think this pair's work rate can go unnoticed.
Aaron Lennon
This lad didn't turn into the world class winger we were hoping for, that much is evident. But that doesn't mean he is simply dispensable. His work rate is second to none for a winger and for someone who doesn't possess a devasting cross he uses the ball exceptionally well. Look at his assist for Soldado's goal. Simple enough and yet it displayed the counter attacking pace and decision making (cough Andros Townsend cough) we've been missing.
Calm in possession... an underrated talent. |
Roberto Soldado
When that goal went in there were nearly tears in my eyes. I've never wanted a player to succeed as much as ol' Bobby. The whole crowd love him. Even Paul Coyte's voice when he announced the goal scorer, number 9... everyone was buzzing. The performance of his striker partner, Harry Kane, helped no end. I cannot praise the latter highly enough for his performances. I don't need a section on Harry Kane; his enthusiasm, guile and willingness to win speaks for itself. But Soldado hit a very calm finish today which ultimately got us the points. We've waited a while to say that.
and finally... Mauricio Pochettino
When you join a new club as manager things will always take time. Pochettino has a clear style of play and we've all been guilty, myself included, of questioning whether his game plan works. Today he got it spot on. Part of it is because everyone bought into the philosophy of high pressing but you can see it reap its rewards time and time again. The crowd was on board today and things worked out well. Let's build on this.
Love him. |
I'd like to finish by echoing the sentiments of Gary Neville and co. on Sky Sports. Every player out there today looked like they wanted to be there. We have far too many attitude problems within our squad and when things are going wrong, heads drop. With an academy core of Kane, Mason and Bentaleb you can see it really means something to these lads. Passion. That's all I've wanted to see.
